Farewell Antarctica

After five weeks in the interior, the return to the coast is a dramatic change. The icebreaker is practically superfluous as the sea ice has broken up earlier than usual this year, leaving McMurdo station surrounded by open water. Animals are everywhere - Orcas and Minke whales, Weddell seals and Adelie penguins, and on the ice road out to the airfield: a colony of moulting Emperor penguins. Antarctica, I will miss you.
