Inside a high-powered laser system, the arc lamp and laser rod are optically coupled using gold-plated elliptical reflectors. The entire assembly is water-cooled to remove many kilowatts of heat, with glass tubes to direct the flow past critical elements. During a recent show, some interlocks were bypassed and an untimely failure of the cooling system led to overheating and explosion of the arc lamp. The result was an embarrassing party, a difficult and expensive repair, and now a comprehensive projector redesign.
