Inside the Instrument Module

Our pilots leave their DHC-6 Twin Otter turboprop engines running whilst we unload equipment and scramble to set up a tent and boil water. Being about 900km away from the nearest other humans, this is a contractual requirement before they depart! Aside from a few very out-of-place box-like objects, the landscape is an uninterrupted, barren white in every direction. I clear the snowdrift from the lid and convince one of the pilots to help me heft open the lid of the instrument module. We're immediately greeted with warm air, blinking lights, and the sound of fans, like a data center server room. We've discussed the detail of the mission for days previously, but he still staggers back in disbelief. Photo courtesy of S.D.
