The service tunnels underneath the South Pole Station are being widened this season, and rather than bringing all the blocks to the surface, some are being stacked in disused passages. On the left is one of many shrines to Antarctic culture and station life, created by workers and distributed throughout the tunnels. There's an ice sculpture of Roald Amundsen, a Sturgeon gifted by a Russian crew some decades ago, sombre tributes to fallen workers, and "The last tub of vanilla - Winter 2012".
