This piston-driven cryocooler and detector are analogous to those used in heat-seeking missiles. But in this case, a specialized charge-integrating amplifier makes it the core of an extremely low-noise infrared measurement instrument, for peaceful purposes! It will be deployed at the coldest site on earth, and remote-controlled using Iridium satellite, providing important scientific data to support future telescope proposals.
