Argon-ion laser show

Argon-ion laser show

2002-12-31

With horizontal scanning using a polygon mirror from a laser printer, and vertical deflection using parts salvaged from a barcode scanner, the projected waveform is synchronized to music - a primitive laser show! The laser source is a multi-line argon-ion tube removed from a high-end graphic arts printer. Approximately 2kW of waste heat is generated in the production of 40mW of light, an efficiency of about 0.002%. Photo courtesy of S.M.
